LESSONS & CAROLS
An Advent & Christmas Celebration
Sunday, December 4, 2011 • 4:00 p.m.
Free-will Offering
A beloved tradition here at Immanuel is the annual Service of Lessons and Carols. It will feature the Chancel Choir with Mark Singleton, Director. Readers of the nine lessons are members and friends of the church. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols celebrates the coming and birth of Jesus. The story of the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine Bible readings from the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns and choir music. Most famously a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is the Christmas Even service held in King's College Chapel. The Festival was introduced in 1918 and was first broadcast in 1928. It is now broadcast live to millions of people around the world.
